Wednesday, June 7, 6:00 pm thru June 8 at 6:00 pm Vermont Gives!
The second annual Vermont Gives 2017 statewide day of giving begins on Tuesday, June 7, at 6:00 pm. The event is sponsored by Common Good Vermont to create the energy and “buzz” that has been very successful in fundraising for various local days of giving around the country.
The Barre Historical Society is participating again this year and the proceeds will be used toward Phase 2 for the restoration of the Union Cooperative Store bakery building into a functioning educational bakery.
When the Barre Historical Society acquired the building, it had been used for vehicle storage for years. During Phase 1 of the preservation project, the structure has been stabilized and insulated to modern standards with flooring and interior walls that will meet modern health standards for a bakery. The overhead door which had been used for vehicular access has been replaced by a doorway for future wood-fired baking educators and students. Phase 1 is complete.
BUT. . . (There is always a but in a project like this.) The building is still a shell.
In order to make the bakery building usable as an educational bakery, we need to install the systems that will actually make it functional—water and sewer, electrical, and heating systems. We are planning to use the proceeds from the Vermont Gives appeal towards the completion of Phase 2.
This is the project for you, if you support
- the preservation historically important buildings,
- the reuse of historic buildings as community resources,
- the education of community members in useful skills such as wood-fired baking, or
- just pine for the smell of fresh baked bread.
