The Old Labor Hall is hosting special film event celebrating the life and music of Chilean musician and political activist Victor Jara. The evening includes a feature-length film that documents the extraordinary life and legacy of iconic Chilean singer-songwriter, Victor Jara, executed in 1973 following a right-wing military coup after which, the writer and producer John Summa will lead a discussion of the film and the legacy of Victor Jara.

Victor Jara was at the forefront of a roots music revival during the tumultuous 1960s in Chile and across Latin America.His songs and singing came to embody the hopes and dreams of an entire continent — a legacy that still resonates today, not just in Latin America, but worldwide.The first part of the film explores, through friends and family, Victor’s music, life and the social context in which he emerges as a leader of a vanguard cultural movement for social change in Chile, South America.The second part of the film captures the coup and post-coup periods, and Victor’s profound impact on activists, artists and musicians of all ages inside and outside Chile.
